<image:title>Claiming the Call to Preach - A Story of Resistance</image:title>
<image:caption>In Claiming the Call, I tell a story of the neglected history of women preaching pioneers. By recovering their stories, women today who continue to face opposition and denial of their call to preach can find effective rhetorical tactics from the past to claim their call in the present. Despite the progress made by and for women in nineteenth-century American society, convention was seemingly fixed in the religious landscape, namely in opposition to women in the pulpit. Women had to narrate their call in a variety of rhetorical forms: itinerant preachers’ personal spiritual autobiographies (Jarena Lee), public platform speeches (Francis Willard), prophetic Biblical interpretations (Louisa Woolsey), and pfulpit sermons (Florence Randolph). This work can speak to any group that has been denied the opportunity to answer their call.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writing for the Ear Reviews - “All who listen to sermons will welcome this contribution to the oral public performance of scriptural interpretation that is the task of preachers today. By recalling this cultural moment, Writing for the Ear, Preaching from the Heart calls preachers to embody their words in a way that reaches the imagination of the listener … Giver-Johnston has provided an invigorating book for preachers.”</image:title>

<image:title>Writing for the Ear Reviews - “The day after our city was traumatized by a hate-fueled mass shooting at a local synagogue, I visited one of the 135 congregations under my care. I was captivated and comforted on that horrific day by the word of the Lord through its pastor, Donna Giver-Johnston. She launches this sterling handbook for working preachers by recounting the story of that sermon, eventually detailing step by step her unique process for preparing and delivering impactful sermons without manuscript or notes. Listen to her. Walk with her. Her sermons stick. Informed by deep engagement with homiletical scholarship, years in fruitful parish ministry, and genuine love for Jesus, this winsome book is rich with wisdom for preachers willing to risk doing something new to better fulfill their marvelous calling.”</image:title>

<image:title>Writing for the Ear Reviews - “Such a tension in our society today: the exhausting, noisy words of anger and unleashed grief and the need for gospel words in response. Our ears, as a society, are tired. We ache to hear otherwise. Donna Giver-Johnston offers a way forward here: she has me listening.”</image:title>

<image:title>Writing for the Ear Reviews - “Grounded in scripture and tradition, in the study of shifting culture and changing homiletical practices, and most of all in the weekly rhythms of congregational preaching, Donna Giver-Johnston provides a lifeline to preachers in Writing for the Ear, Preaching from the Heart. She vividly describes an accessible, dynamic method of sermon preparation and presentation, and provides helpful exercises to practice these strategies. Giver-Johnston is convinced that Word of God can be spoken in every sanctuary, every week—and her confidence is contagious.”</image:title>

<image:title>Claiming the Call Reviews - “Kudos for this excellent addition to the study of women and preaching! Donna Giver-Johnston not only provides us with a deeply nuanced historical study of how four diverse nineteenth-century preaching women claimed their own calls to preach. She also invites us to wrestle more deeply with the whole notion of call, how it is mediated in human life, and how those who have been marginalized from the pulpit can creatively reclaim their callings today.”</image:title>

<image:title>Claiming the Call Reviews - “In Claiming the Call to Preach, Giver-Johnston examines the rhetorical strategies whereby nineteenth-century women claimed their calling to preach. She shows how their rhetoric set into motion a historical trajectory that did much to move women's preaching from spaces marginal to the organized church (revivals, movements, educational gatherings, etc.) into the center of the church's ecclesial and public life. This is an important book for both feminist rhetoric, and the history of preaching.”</image:title>

<image:title>Claiming the Call Reviews - “Claiming the Call to Preach seeks to restore a 'narrative of neglect' with regard to the call and contributions of women preachers, both in history and today. Donna Giver-Johnston skillfully interweaves her own reflection on her call, that of women clergy and students with whom she has worked and the historical women from whom both can draw inspiration and strategic wisdom. This book makes a significant contribution to the field of homiletical history which has not traditionally focused on in-depth treatments of women preachers from the past.”</image:title>
